| 'Lingual' your way to a straighter smile |

Lingual braces are an invisible orthodontic treatment, used to correct crooked or misaligned teeth.
How do they work?
Like a traditional fixed brace, the lingual brace is made up of small metal brackets that are glued to the teeth and connected with a wire. This wire is tightened every 6 - 8 weeks, gently pulling the teeth into their end position.
The main advantage, however, is that the brace is attached to the inside surface of your teeth and therefore totally invisible when you smile.
Lingual braces are usually worn for 18 - 36 months, until the teeth are in the correct position. After this time, a retainer is worn to prevent the teeth from moving back.
Pros and Cons
While lingual braces are a great way to alter the appearance of your teeth without anyone knowing it, patients should consider:
- Like all orthodontic treatments, braces can be a source of mild discomfort, especially following adjustments to the wires.
- As lingual braces are a relatively new treatment, it is less widely available. This, together with the fact that the brackets are custom made to fit the back surfaces of the teeth, means that treatment costs are higher than fixed braces.
- Both adjustment time and treatment time is often longer for lingual braces.
- Like with all braces, it is up to the patient to exercise excellent oral hygiene, to prevent decay and dental damage around the brackets.
Is a lingual brace suitable for me?
Generally lingual braces are suitable for adults and teens with crowding, gaps, rotated teeth and those requiring bite realignment; however, they may not be suitable for all patients, particularly those with smaller teeth and certain bites. Your orthodontist will advise you on which treatment is best for your needs.
