Many people, or to be more accurate, according to a survey, 7% of American people suffer from the problem where they can’t urinate in places where they feel like their privacy is being invaded or can be invaded. This problem is known as shy bladder syndrome. It has other names too like bashful bladder syndrome or the medical term for this problem, Paruresis.

What is shy bladder syndrome? It is the condition where a person finds it nearly impossible to urinate in public areas like public restrooms, urinals etc. Unlike the other physical problem, Prostatis which is similar problem but has different reasons, shy bladder syndrome is a completely psychological problem. On the other hand, in prostatis, there is physical problem; the inflammation of the prostates blocks the passage of urine making it very painful or even sometimes impossible for the person to urinate. Whereas in the shy bladder syndrome, the sub conscious mind relates urinating in public restrooms or urinals to a painful memory and the muscles around the bladder tighten, making it impossible for the person to urinate.

Though the best way to treat this problem will be to seek therapy from a qualified doctor, there are some simple measures also which can ease the situation. First thing which you can do and most probably already do is taking less liquid when outside. This is the first step in easing your shy bladder syndrome. Fewer intakes of fluid and liquids will ensure that there is less pressure in bladder. Less pressure in the bladder will mean that you will not have to go to the bathroom again and again. This helps a lot if you are suffering from the bashful bladder syndrome.

Second thing which you should try is having distractions while in restroom. Many people say that they get really uncomfortable if there is pin drop silence in the public restroom they are using. So try humming or singing the lines of the songs you like or which are your favorite. You can also try whistling to distract your mind from the silence. And to be logical, when you will be humming, singing or whistling, there will not be any silence in the rest room anymore.

Third thing which you should try is opting for less crowded restrooms and then gradually start increasing the use of restrooms which are usually crowded or using the restrooms during lunch breaks when everyone goes to the restroom. This gradual increase will help you and you will see that you no longer feel conscious when the restrooms are crowded.

Fourth thing which you must do is practice, that to on regular time. As they say that practice makes a man perfect, you should practice going to a public restroom even if you find yourself unable to urinate in starting. Slowly your mind and body will grow accustomed to the atmosphere of the public restroom and you will feel relaxed. Once relaxed, you will be able to urinate easily without worrying about any shy bladder syndrome. For more details visit: http://shybladdercure.info/2010/09/overcoming-your-bashful-bladder/
