No one knows exactly why, but the colder the weather gets, the more prevalent the flu becomes. And this year, with the international swine flu epidemic, people need to be even more careful than usual when it comes to flu-prevention and treatment methods. Here are four ways you can keep yourself and your family flu-free as the weather gets colder and as people around you seem to get sicker.

1. Invest in a flu treatment BEFORE you get sick. You can at an without a prescription. That means that you can store a few rounds of it in your cupboard just in case the flu suddenly strikes.

2. Wash your hands frequently. Germs spread more easily than you realize. So if you're riding public transportation, walking through a hospital, or taking your kids to school, you're putting yourself in a germ-filled environment, and your hands can pass those germs quickly. So wash your hands to protect yourself and others from infection.

3. If there's been an influenza break-out in your neighborhood, you'll want to take extra precautions when you put yourself in the public arena. Wipe down grocery carts, use a paper towel to open the door of a public bathroom, and wear a mask and gloves if you need to come in direct contact with an infected individual.

4. Don't touch your face. Another tip on spreading germs: Germs like to get into your system through the orifices on your face, particularly your eyes, nose, and mouth. Keep your hands clean and away from your vulnerable face.

5. Adopt a healthy lifestyle. Lose weight if you need to, exercise, and eat healthfully. If the flu strikes, you want to have a lot of energy and a strong immune system so you can successfully battle those germs.
