Whether you prefer the savory, smoky flavor of a charcoal grill or rich, appetizing aroma of a propane grill, there are a few grill tools that will make the job easier. Here are 7 must-have grill tools that every chef should have in their arsenal.
Barbecue Mitts. Many people tend to overlook barbecue mitts when shopping for grill tools. Barbecue mitts are designed to protect your hands at all times when cooking. These essential grill tools are especially important when you are dumping coals out of a chimney starter or moving them around the charcoal grate. After all, fire is hot!
Chimney Starter. If you have a charcoal grill, chimney starters are one of the most convenient grill tools you can own. A chimney starter provides simple way to light charcoal and the cylindrical shape promotes a fast, even burn. When shopping for these grill tools, you should buy one big enough to light as many coals as will fit in a single layer across your charcoal grate.
Grill Brushes. These are the best grill tools for keeping your cooking grate clean. Most grills can be cleaned with a stiff bristled brass brush; however if you have porcelain or cast-iron cooking grates you will need a grill brush with steel bristles. Many grill manufacturers engineer specially shaped grill tools and brushes that make it easy to clean in between closely spaced bars.
Basting Brushes. These grill tools work well for basting but are even more useful for brushing oil on food before grilling. Look for basting brushes with soft, flexible bristles with a long handle. To keep these grill tools in great condition, always wash them by hand after every use. Washing basting brushes in the dishwasher can be very hard on the bristles.
Grill Baskets. Novice chefs and grill masters alike agree that using grill baskets are the best way to cook a variety of items. Using these must-have grill tools allows you to easily cook small or thinly sliced vegetables that would otherwise fall through the grates. You can cook asparagus to perfection in just three minutes using a flexible grill basket. How about broccoli and snap peas? It would be next to impossible to grill either one of these without a grill basket. But throw them in a wok designed for the grill with some hot oil and you will have sizzling hot stir fry in just a few minutes. Specialty grill tools and baskets are also available for items such as corn on the cob, fish filets and sliders.
Spatulas. These grill tools are required for turning burgers, chicken and even pizzas. As with other grill tools, look for spatulas that boast an extra long handle as well as a long, wide and sturdy blade.
Tongs. Tongs are probably the most used grill tools of all. You should have at least three pairs: one for picking up raw food, one for handling cooked food and one for arranging coals if you own a charcoal grill. When shopping for these grill tools, look for tongs that are spring loaded and made of stainless steel.
These are the most essential grill tools that any chef should have. You may also want to consider purchasing other grill tools such as a meat thermometer, metal skewers, a grill light or even a rotisserie as well.
