Loss of appetite may be defined as an unwillingness to eat food. A person with loss of appetite hardly feels hungry. Loss of appetite is medically termed as anorexia. Loss of appetite has its own peaks and troughs. Some of the causes of loss of appetite include aging, pregnancy, anxiety and depression, loss of smelling and tasting power, nausea, swallowing difficulty, drug abuse, dehydration, pain, radiation treatment, medical conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, jaundice, asthma, Addison’s disease, Yellow fever, dementia, hypothyroidism, gastrointestinal infections, AIDS, inflammation of gallbladder, congestive heart failure, kidney and liver failures, cancers of colon, stomach, pancreas or ovaries, medications like antibiotics, amphetamines, chemotherapy drugs etc. Stress, smoking, alcohol intake, physical inactivity, extremes of weather conditions and unhealthy food habits worsen the problem.

Loss of appetite may come along with multiple symptoms. Some of the symptoms are fatigue, breathing difficulty, exceptional weight loss, constipation, acidity, indigestion, loose motion, abdominal cramping, cough, mild fever, general malaise, mood swings, rapid heart rate, nausea, dizziness, reduced urine output etc

Cures for appetite loss:

1. Instruct your family members to cook your favorite dishes so that your appetite gets stimulated.

2. Maintain a diet history or a record of your food and fluid intake.

3. If you face difficulty in eating at a time, take frequent small meals. This will help you to deal with the problem.

4. You can take herbal capsules such as Arozyme capsules to boost your appetite. Capsules of dandelion, yarrow flower, slippery elm, astragalus etc are quite effective in this direction.

5. Acupressure works amazingly as an appetite loss cure.

6. Do not eat hurriedly. Chew the food well and feel its taste. This will sharpen your appetite.

7. You can use the following home cures for boosting appetite:

a. Soak tamarind in water and later mash them thoroughly. Strain the tamarind water, season with a pinch of rock salt and pepper and drink.
b. Drinking glassful pomegranate juice twice daily helps in increasing appetite.
c. Most vegetable juices have appetite boosting properties.
d. Add 1 tablespoon each of ginger juice and lemon juice in 1 glass water and drink daily to get cured of appetite loss.
e. Include boiled bitter gourd in your diet in plenty.
f. Hot garlic soups can restore appetite.
g. Mingle 6 drops of coriander oil, 4 drops black pepper oil, 3 drops ginger oil, 1 drop peppermint oil, 8 drops sage oil. Store the mixture in an air-tight bottle. Smell from it whenever you feel that your appetite is low.

8. Unload yourself of worries. Practice deep breathing, meditation, yoga to get rid of unnecessary worries.

9. You can use over the counter appetite stimulating drugs like Megestrol Acetate, Megace ES, Cyproheptadine, Dronabinol etc.
