| If you have been informed about the benefits of installing electric fencing to protect your livestock and property, then you may have additional questions about electric fencing and electric fence materials that are available for purchase. Here is some information about basic electric fence materials and components.Common electric fence materials include steel wire, which can range from very thin to very thick, high-tensile wire. This wire is used to conduct electricity through the fence if a person or animal comes into contact with it, thus deterring people and animals from coming into your fence boundaries, as well as deterring your own livestock from leaving your fence boundaries. Other common electric fence materials that have emerged within the past fifteen to twenty years are rope-like and synthetic webbing electric fence materials. These types of electric fence materials are growing in popularity and are very good for areas that need extra visibility because the synthetic rope-like material is easier to see than wire. These types of electric fencing materials are also typically used in areas that need electric fences only temporarily.Other electric fence materials include fence energizers, which are responsible for generating the electrical pulses that give the electric fence its name. Early models of electric fence energizers were paired with transformers and mechanical switches which generated electrical pulses. However the pulses generated by these early types of energizers were unpredictable and prone to failure. Some energizers used to be made to generate a longer and stronger electrical pulse that would burn through weeds that might be touching the electric wiring. However, this was the cause of many fires and consequently this type of energizer became less common and less desirable.Today electric fence energizers use a better design to make them more predictable and less prone to break downs. They use electric fence parts called capacitors to release an electric charge if the electric fence materials are touched by a person or an animal. This design of energizer will work with either battery power or electrical power and provides consistent voltage through the electric fence materials.Electric fence materials that make up the fence framing typically consist of metal or wooden posts that are driven into the ground and connected to porcelain or plastic insulators which help insulate the wires, since the actual electric fencing material cannot be directly connected to the metal or wooden posts. The framework needs to be very solid to withstand the pressure of animals running into it, since some unwitting animals may try to do this when attempting to escape the electric shock.Although there are several different options for electric fence materials that you can purchase and install, they are all made to do the same thing – generate electric shocks to keep your animals in and other animals and people out. So no matter which type you choose, you are likely to achieve the outcome that you are looking for, it's just that some types of electric fences may serve your purposes better than others so make sure you know what you are looking for before you go shopping for electric fencing. |
