There comes a time in every pool owner's life when you must face the task of replacing your swimming pool pump motor. Your motor may be broken for various reasons - maybe the bearings are worn out and broken, so it makes a lot of noise when you turn it on - or maybe the motor won't run because it's burned out. Though it may seem impossible to fix and you may want to give up and just go out and buy a whole new swimming pool pump, remember - not all hope is lost. As long as you feel comfortable with doing a little fiddling with your swimming pool pump's motor, any average pool owner can fix the problem relatively easily. And remember, if you don't feel comfortable working with the wiring you can always take the swimming pool pump to your local professional.
First, you'll want to make sure swimming pool pump is completely off by checking the breaker and flipping off the pump's switch. Next you'll want to undo the bolts or band clamps that are holding the motor mounting bracket to the strainer. Now the strainer can separate from the swimming pool pump so it won't get in the way when you're working with the motor. You'll see a gasket or o-ring that seals the motor to the strainer. Take a good look at it, because you might need to replace it if it's worn. Now you can remove the back plate and get to the wiring. Watch out though, there may be a bare copper wire that you'll need to detach on the outside before opening your swimming pool pump motor.
You should see one green wire and two other wires (usually black and white) that are your lead wires - disconnect them. Then disconnect the conduit, or sleeve, covering the wires between the swimming pool pump motor and switch box. Remove the impeller by taking off the volute covering (if there is one), popping off the plate at the opposite end of the motor, and unscrewing the impeller the opposite direction that the veins point on the outside. Now that you're done with that, check the pump seal - it may need to be replaced as well. Now it's very easy to see the bolts that hold the mounting bracket to the motor - unbolt these to take out the motor. All you need to do now is buy a new motor and then reverse the process. Make sure to go nice and slow, putting everything back correctly. Voila! Your swimming pool pump is working properly again.
Now that the swimming pool pump is fixed and put back in place with your pool filter, you're pool will finally be able to function properly again. The best part about it was that you were able to do the process all on your own without having to worry about figuring out how to get a new filter. Congratulations! Because of your beginning electrician skills, your swimming pool pump works perfectly now and is able to keep your pool nice and clean.
