While India is undoubtedly making rapid strides in the field of technology and manufacturing, what is causing anxiety is the large scale conversion of agricultural land for building and other non agricultural purposes, rural folks abandoning agriculture in search of jobs to the urban areas etc which are bound to have a strong long term impact on the country's food production especially in view of its galloping population growth. Growth of technology at the cost of agriculture would leave us with a lot of 'chips and bytes' but no chips to bite. In a dismal scenario like this we have a heartening story to report from Kavaraparambu in Angamaly's hinterland where the local Vicar is making villagers understand the need to get back to mankind's most important profession - Farming!

Kavaraparambu not long ago was a typical picture of the agriculture neglected village with farmers having given up paddy cultivation on account of losses incurred by them. Father John Puthuva the Vicar at the local church took it as a challenge and launched his "Everyone to the paddy field project". Uncultivated land measuring 100 acres was identified, farmers were divided into teams and allocated different farming tasks, the agriculture department extended its help by providing free seeds and manure and guidance on the latest farming techniques.

Men, Women and children enthused by all these inputs and the Father's strong encouragement swung into action watering, applying manure/pesticide, de-weeding activities with great gusto accompanied by the Father.

The efforts of Father John Puthuva who is also a lecturer at the Bharatha Matha College, Thrikkakkara has made the village of Kavaraparambu stand apart in the neighbourhood with its banana plantations in every house, lush kitchen gardens and real time exposure to children on agricultural practices by taking them to the paddy fields. The efforts of the Father and the whole hearted co-operation of the villagers promise to make Kavaraparambu totally self reliant in food grains very soon, global food security would cease to be an issue threatening the world if we had more men like him.
