I was about to write off the tail end of The Office, Season 7, as a show that could not survive without the character of Michael Scott, but I could be wrong. The script was actually pretty funny, especially when it came to the canditate interviews. The funniest conversation came from Will Arnetts character, who told the interviewers that he had a 3-Part Plan for doubling profits, but had no intention of sharing it. If you hire me, you get the plan, he told them. Eventually, he did agree to giving them part 3 of part 2. Good comedy writing. It made me laugh, but it also made me see a similarity between this and sharing SEO advice. Really, no SEO expert wants to spill the whole SEO plan, because every SEO expert has had to learn what can work and what does not work the hard way, over months and years of efforts. Building up effective traffic to a search optimized website requires continual, trackable, hard work and few search professionals are willing to have their inside knowledge be a completely open book. True, there are best practices that good SEO pros know of and adhere to. Also true that most of our reward is the result of labor, and not because we know secrets that others do not. For my PrintSites customers, I spend a great deal of time optimizing their web storefronts. In my new series for the PrintSites newsletter, I will begin sharing some of the parts of a great SEO Plan for web2print professionals. Please feel free to visit and sign up for our newsletter so you can catch them all. Of course, I cannot tell you the entire plan, but if you join PrintSites, you get the whole plan.

The first SEO tip I have for web to print providers is this: be sure your web presence has back end fields for metadata. Metadata is data about other data. Or put another way, metadata tells the web crawlers what they will find on a particular web page. Web2print storefronts who have a web presence that they want found by online print customers through search, need to first be found by the web crawlers. They will index their web pages with the goal of placing them on a Google results page. At PrintSites, we put metadata fields in our free website designs, so that our users can optimize their new storefronts for great search results, with or without my SEO expertise.
