When completing GCSE, the best option for students is to enrol themselves for A level courses. These courses are important as they offer standard qualification to the students for gaining admission to the top universities. Therefore the students must choose a good sixth form school to complete these courses.
Most of the students in the United Kingdom choose A Level courses immediately after they have completed their GCSE programme. This course aims at honing the student skills and prepares them to secure a place in one of the reputable universities. Sixth form colleges and schools are the institutions where students can pursue this course. Students can find several such colleges and schools in London which are known for their excellent education standards.
What Is A Level Course?
A level or Advanced level course is the most popular course in UK, which enables students to gain in-depth knowledge on specific subjects before they go to university. Students who are 11 to 13 years of age can enrol themselves for A levels. Adults can also take A levels qualification to study further. A level is highly preferred by all the universities, colleges and schools in Britain.
Students can study A level as part of a Diploma, or with any other courses like National Vocational Qualifications and other vocational courses. Many of them prefer to complete this course at their own schools from which they have completed their GCSE, whereas the others search for the best sixth form college to complete the same.
Grading And Marking
AS level is taken in the first year and A2 level in the second. The assessment in both mainly comprises written examinations, with projects assigned to the students throughout the session. These projects are checked and graded by the teachers of the same institution and then sent to an external examiner to make sure that the students get the correct grade.
Students are scheduled to take this exam at the start of the year and at the end of an academic year. At the end of the exams the answer sheets are checked by the examination board and students are graded accordingly. The highest ranking is A*, but students need to get an E grade just to pass the A levels. Students who are not happy with their results can retake the exam or can ask for remarking.
The Grades and their Percentages are as follows;
Average of 90% across A2 modules are awarded an A*
Marks above 80% are awarded an A
Marks less than 79% but more than 70% are awarded a B
Marks below 70% but more than 60% are awarded a C
Marks between 50 to 59% are awarded a D
Marks between 40 to 49% are awarded an E
