A growing dependence on electrical goods in the modern world has made it necessary ensure that the cables supplying power and connectivity to these goods are properly managed.

Whether it be in the home or the business, poor cable management not only looks unsightly - it can cause a serious risk to safety as well as inconvenient damage.

This potential risk can be minimised substantially just simply by installing either cable trunking or steel conduit trunking.

Electrical conduits or cable trunking, as it is more commonly referred to in the United Kingdom, is a system that utilises pipes primarily to route and protect cables.

Steel conduit trunking is ideal for the often-harsh conditions of the outdoors; providing a strong, rigid shell thick enough to protect the cables installed inside from any damage.

However, the cold, industrialised look of steel conduit trunking can look unpleasant if installed in, for example, an office interior. It can also be impractical as the cables are much harder to access, and as a result an unnecessary addition.

For this reason a more flexible cable trunking is a more appropriate for indoor spaces, of which PVC cable trunking is probably the best type.

Its secure click and lock system allows for any extra cables to be added, or indeed removed, at any time after the initial installation without too much difficulty.

Installing PVC cable trunking couldn't be any simpler than cutting the trunking to the required length and then screwing to the surface.

Holes should be made about 15 inches apart and a mark made on the wall or surface where the trunking is to be fitted - then it's as easy as securing the fitting. It should be noted however that different surfaces might require different screws or screw sockets, so it's always important to check before securing.

The process of installing steel conduit trunking is more complicated.

Turnbuckles help keep the cable trunking in place, ensuring that the tension and length can be adjusted without causing any damage to the enclosed wires; while screws are used to fix the fittings into position.

Some materials are more reactive with the elements than others. For example if you install cable trunking in an area producing or using highly corrosive materials, the type of trunking needed may vary.
In this case a galvanised material such as stainless steel would be more beneficial than say PVC cable trunking.

For outdoor and exterior cable trunking and cable management work it is probably best to consult the knowledge and skill of a trained professional. In instances where a large amount of cable needs to be protected, a team may be required to fulfil the large workload.

Although this may cost a little extra it's worth it to be safe in the knowledge that an industry expert has installed the trunking to the correct safety standards.

While you may question the expense of installing great lengths of steel conduit trunking or cable trunking, it should be remembered that it not only protects your cables but more importantly it ensures your safety too.
