If you're off on holiday and want as much flexibility as possible once you reach your destination then it's a great idea to take or hire a car so that you can head off wherever you want, whenever you want. If you've never driven abroad before, though, it can be a daunting proposition. Ask for advice from friends and family and you're likely to be met with ‘make sure you drive on the correct side of the road' but there's plenty more you can do to prepare yourself.

First and foremost, do some research and find out if you'll need to obtain an international driving permit - and if you're taking your own car with you, be sure to notify your insurance company to ensure that you are properly covered for driving somewhere other than the UK.

Avoid long car journeys where possible while on holiday, especially if you're suffering from jet lag. If you're travelling with somebody else who is able to drive consider sharing time behind the wheel as regular breaks will be a big help in aiding concentration when on unfamiliar roads.

It's also a good idea to see if there's any information available in terms of how people in your destination country drive in general as it may not be what you're used to. Similarly, read up on the relevant local road laws as they may differ from the UK. Check the speed limits and stick to them rigidly - and avoid drinking and driving completely if possible as the legal blood alcohol limit may be lower than at home.

Always carry your identification with you when on the roads and be prepared to show it to the authorities if stopped. Being pulled over by local police is a lot more common in certain countries than in the UK so don't be nervous if you're stopped for a routine check.

However you decide to get around when you're on holiday, it's always vital to take out travel insurance to cover your needs while you're away. If you're unfortunate enough to become ill or be involved in an accident abroad then you want to be able to rely on your cover to provide the necessary medical assistance. If you have a pre-existing medical condition then be sure to fully disclose it when taking out your policy - and consider going through a specialist travel health insurance provider.
