The Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad's (KSSP) call to liberate people especially youth from the clutches of religious bigotry, communalism and narrow mindedness could not have come at a better time. It is a sad irony that while on one hand the nation is moving towards becoming the next technological and financial superpower thanks to its rapid advancements made especially in the fields of IT and Telecom, we also witness religious fundamentalism, extremism, superstition and an unscientific approach to life which are obstructing growth and creating a poor image of us in the world's eye.
The Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad in an echo of Rabindranath Tagore's immortal lines "where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit" is launching a State level drive against casteism, religious fundamentalism, superstition and social evils. It aims particularly to liberate today's youth from irrational thinking in the name of religion by creating a scientific temperament. The Parishad's district level committees will organize awareness classes and campaigns in schools and colleges to reach its objective. A seminar on 'Astrology and Astronomy' and 'Science and Scientific awareness' is being organised at Perinthalmanna on November 7th as part of the Parishad's efforts towards creating awareness in the campus.
Vijayan clarified that it is not the intention of the Parishad to impose a new ideology on the young generation but to lead them towards a more secular, tolerant and enlightened society. The KSSP is also planning a campaign against the involvement of religious heads and leaders in politics which is very prevalent today and leading to incidents like the attack on Professor Joseph of Newman's college. The Parishad is very clear in its belief that religion is a highly personal affair and should not be linked with public affairs including politics or exploited to reap a political harvest. Vijayan observed that while politicians are free to seek divine blessings by visiting various religious places they do not have the right to lead society to superstitious beliefs and customs. The Parishad is planning to organise seminars, workshops and youth camps to promote peace and understanding among religious and secular communities. The KSSP deserves the whole hearted support and co-operation of all enlightened individuals in its laudable effort to save society.
