| A Review of Long Distance Phone Services |

Before you decide on which long distance phone service to go with you need to consider what type of service you want. Is a traditional land line phone service, or an internet phone VoIP service?
The different between land line and VoIP
Making a decision between VoIP and landlines is not as straightforward as it might seem given how much cheaper VoIP is than landline calls.
The main reason for this is that often VoIP services don't offer the features you would expect from a traditional landline, and what you are probably used to. For example, some VoIP services won't allow you to call the emergency services. Also some international destinations are restricted. On top of that, if you have to experience a power outage or a loss of internet service then you will not be able to use VoIP, which means you cannot inform your ISP that the service is down, unless you have a mobile phone to hand. Which in this day and age, most of us do.
Additionally, considering that most people have ADSL broadband, you will still need to pay a line rental. As a consequence, at this stage, most people cannot dismiss landlines outright, and still prefer to use VoIP as an added bonus to their home phone service.
That is not to say that VoIP cannot be hugely beneficial on its own though. It is particularly beneficial if you have family and friends overseas and therefore will require a lot of long distance phone calls. Having the freedom and ability to call day or night, free of charge and for as long as you please is one of the great aspects of VoIP.
Choosing a VoIP provider for Long Distance Phone Calls
If you only want to communicate occasionally with the odd friend who lives abroad over the internet, then one of the free services such as Skype might do the job. However, if you are looking for a real alternative to your landline service then you might want to consider signing up with an actual VoIP service provider that will offer you a package deal based on a monthly or annual fee.
There is an array of VoIP service providers for you to choose from, and you will find that most offer basic services such as call forwarding, call waiting and call display and those features should usually be covered in their standard fee. The real differences between providers are the rates that they charge for long-distance calls. VoIP service providers offer many different price plans and most fall into two categories; unlimited or limited package plans.
Unlimited does what it says on the tin, there is no limit to the amount of calls you make within an agreed area, such as using your VoIP in Canada and USA. You pay a flat fee and then you can make as many calls as you please. Whilst this type of plan is more expensive, it may well work out cheaper if you plan on making a lot of long distance phone calls.
The other option is a limited package, whereby you can pay for a certain amount of minute's worth of free calls every month. However once those free minutes are used up you will be charged an additional fee.
