| The Weber grill is a symbol of backyard cooking in America and beyond. The company sells grills and accessories in 30 different countries. The Weber grill has been in existence for over five decades. The Weber grill is now even used in fine restaurants. It may interest customers to know that the first Weber grill was made from the bottom of buoy, which served as the cooking base. The Weber grill was started by George Stephen who was an employee of Weber Brothers Metal Works in Illinois. There they mostly welded metal buoys for the Coast Guard. George had a passion for grilling and thought of it as a great way to spend time with his growing family. But he was not happy with the flat open brazier, which was the most popular grill of that time, so he began his own design which eventually became the Weber grill. Customers desiring to purchase the Weber grill can see the original buoy in its distinctive design. Essentially George added a tripod to the Weber grill and then, after having trouble keeping the fire a light inside the grill, drilled three holes in the top to provide oxygen. He then took his grill on the road. Eventually, he formed the Weber-Stephens company in 1958. This was the beginning of the Weber grill. George was very successful with his design of the Weber grill. It was so popular that he was able to charge $50 even though his competitor, the flat open brazier, was priced at only $7. In 1959 he employed 12 men who manufactured 15,000 units in that year. By focusing on the higher end of the market, he began making profits of 40% a year throughout the seventies, selling up to 800,000 units per year. The Weber grill became so popular that during the eighties, the Weber-Stephen company had to conduct a five-year legal battle to protect its trademark status against dozens of foreign competitors who had copied his design. Throughout this time the Weber grill burned charcoal. In the mid eighties, gas became a popular fuel for grills. So in 1985, Weber-Stephen took a chance and invested heavily in the gas technology. This resulted in the Genesis range of gas-powered Weber grills, that has persisted over two decades, and is still available today. By the year 1995, this new gas-fueled Weber grill outsold the original charcoal model. By this time, Weber-Stephen had decided to enter the restaurant business. They used a Weber grill in their new grill restaurant in Welling, Illinois. Patrons would watch through the window while food was being prepared on an oversized Weber grill. The restaurant, as well as offering the traditional burgers and chicken, also served up grilled pizzas, breaded tilapia and a variety of grilled vegetables. But during this time, the Weber grill benefited from a wealth of experience of the company during its manufacture of grills and its use of the grills in restaurants. They have taken advantage of this great knowledge to produce an excellent quality range of grills to match the need of any outdoor chef. |
