| A Tarp for Every Occasion |

Kurt Zier writes about tarps for The Home Depot. He discusses the various materials available, and |

The word tarpaulin is a combination of two words, referring to a specially treated canvas used to cover and protect items on a ship; tarp is an abbreviation of this term. And today, as in the past, a tarp is a specially treated, sheet of material that is used to provide shelter or protection by covering the object of value. The tarp of today may be made of canvas, but may also be a vinyl tarp or a polyethylene tarp. Today's tarp will be found aboard many boats and will also be found atop a truck, covering crops and protecting recreational vehicles. Yesterday's tarp was a necessary tool; today's tarp might be another piece of camping equipment for a teenage adventurer. Whatever the need, there is a tarp available to fill it.
The range of tarp usage has grown to include ball fields. The grass of the field and the levelness of the grass are very important to the athletes, their teams and the many spectators who will attend the event. One tarp or several will be used to protect the playing field. A tarp will provide shelter and protection for the business logos around the playing area and a tarp may even be used to cover the entire arena. For smaller sporting events, a tarp may be erected to provide a shaded shelter for either fans or athletes. A brightly colored tarp may be the eye-catching draw of the ticket stand or concession booth.
Trucks are often in need of a tarp. The tarp constructed for trucking use will be made of a stronger, extra-coated vinyl fabric. This tarp may be intended for use in transporting lumber or steel. The truck tarp designed for such a heavy-duty job will have extra stitching, much stronger grommets and some extra binding. A truck tarp is built to handle the wind and dirt erosion that comes with being on the road.
A rancher will find a tarp to be very valuable, whether the rancher is in the market for a hay tarp or a lightweight, inexpensive tarp to shade the pigs; a tarp is available to fit that task. When the animals are ready to give birth, the rancher will help wherever that animal happens to be. A tarp can provide a fast and easy shelter. Farmers may use a tarp to cover expensive farm equipment at the end of harvest and over the winter. A tarp keeps out both the snow or rain and the harmful effects of extreme temperature changes. Placing a tarp over bales of hay, stacks of wheat, or piles of grain provides a barrier between the harvested crop and dirt or unintended seeds carried on the wind.
Even filling such important jobs, the tarp is still available for use in a smaller home setting. A tarp will protect surfaces from home repairs, a tarp can serve as a backdrop for a holiday play, or a tarp will serve as a barrier between morning dew and the family spending a night under the stars. Anywhere there is a need for a protective cover; there is a tarp for that. |
