We all have activities or behaviours that are habitual, from cleaning our teeth twice daily to taking the same route to work each day. Even though we do these things over and over again, they could hardly be classified as addictions, so it’s important to identify at what point something escalates from a habit to an addiction. The key attributes that identify an addiction are that the activity or behaviour is unhealthy, and that it has negative or destructive consequences for the person. It also follows then that the addiction, whatever it is, also impacts negatively on family and friends, destroying relationships and in many cases leading to criminal activity.
There are many different types of addictions but the most commonly known ones that affect the largest numbers of people are gambling, drugs, alcohol, internet, smoking, sex, food, and work. While some of these may seem less harmful than others, what must be remembered is that the activity becomes an addiction when it consumes all other activities and creates an unhealthy environment around the addict. People with addictions can be helped through a range of interventions including counselling Brisbane.
Addictions can be triggered by circumstances, often as a result of the environment the addict has grown up in. People who are subjected to emotional, psychological, sexual and physical abuse during childhood don’t develop healthy coping strategies. When life throws them a challenge like unemployment or the ending of a valued relationship, they are much more likely to seek release from their anger and frustration through addiction than an emotionally healthy individual.
Indulging in addictive behaviours or activities temporarily block out the addict’s emotional pain, but eventually the addiction takes over completely, leading to the loss of everything worthwhile e.g. family, relationships, employment, friends, finances and finally, their health. The addict can also have drifted into criminal activity to fund their addiction resulting in a permanent criminal record.
People in these circumstances live in an almost permanent state of stress and depression. The stress is a result of constant attempts to conceal the behaviour from those around them, and depression then develops from the feelings of hopelessness when their attempts to break their addiction fail.
Many addictions can be successfully treated with the assistance of a psychologist Brisbane, who can engage with the addicted person in an atmosphere of safety and acceptance. A professional is able to talk through the deep-rooted problems and experiences with the addicted person to enable them to release their anger towards themselves and others.
Addictions are one of the most self-destructive sets of circumstances a person can experience. Often they start slowly with the person believing that they have it all under control. However, the addiction soon becomes the master, and if the person cannot withdraw from it on their own, they should seek professional help before their lives are irreversibly damaged.
