Are you sneezing or suffering from a runny or stuffy nose? Are your eyes watering, and your throat feels itchy and irritated? It's that time of year for about 36 million Americans - allergy season, and it can make allergy sufferers miserable. What you may not know is that chiropractic medicine may be able to offer some relief.

The Nervous System Plays a Key Role

Asheville, NC chiropractor, Dr. David Nygaard, sees a variety of allergy sufferers throughout the year. "It's fulfilling to help allergy sufferers, especially this time of year," says Dr. Nygaard.

A healthy spine can improve your life overall, and chiropractic care can be beneficial by removing subluxations, or misaligned spinal vertebra, that are placing stress on the nervous system.

Allergies are the result of an imperfect immune system and the immune system is orchestrated by your nervous system. The autoimmune system helps us adapt and respond to our environment, but it may become overactive or underactive if there is a disturbance in the nervous system. Allergies occur when the immune system becomes overactive because it's responding to foreign molecules in our bodies. When it's working properly and efficiently, your body reacts and responds appropriately. When it's not working correctly, your responses show this inefficiency.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help?

"Chiropractic care is about overall peak performance," says Dr. Nygaard, owner of Atlas Family Chiropractic. "Many people don't realize that chiropractic care can help provide significant relief for allergy sufferers."

When we are at capacity and encounter allergens such as foods, chemicals or pollen, our bodies reacts accordingly with an allergic reaction. The first exposure to an allergen triggers an immune response. Subsequent exposures result in allergy symptoms. One reaction occurs when our bodies produce histamines. This reaction can often be seen in the form of a runny nose, inflammation, hives, rashes or difficulty breathing. The most serious of these types of reactions is anaphylaxis, a severe reaction leading to difficulty breathing, a significant decrease in blood pressure and unconsciousness.

Allergies can also pose a serious health threat to an estimated 23 million Americans with asthma. Allergic reactions can quickly go from an irritation to producing dangerous, life-threatening symptoms.

Food allergies can also be responsible for a variety of conditions such as colds, ear infections, ADD/ADHD, digestive problems, inflammatory bowel diseases, arthritis, irritability, migraines and depression. If it's difficult to pinpoint the cause of a food allergy, sometimes it's best to eliminate entire groups of food. Some people have found success by simply eliminating certain grains, gluten, nuts or dairy.

"Although nothing can totally ‘cure' allergies, chiropractic care can be beneficial by protecting the body and the immune system," explains Dr. Nygaard.

He goes on to explain that a recent patient had been living with allergies, severe sinus problems, itchy eyes and congestion for more than 20 years.

"She was beside herself, carrying tissues and eye drops with her everywhere, and was exhausted and desperate for a solution. After a few adjustments, her allergy symptoms improved and she was able to be medication-free," says Dr. Nygaard.

Traditional allergy treatments, such as antihistamines, focus on the symptoms of allergies without addressing the cause. Chiropractic care helps our bodies to adapt to the physical, chemical and emotional stresses in our lives. By locating and reducing nervous system disturbances, chiropractic care restores your ability to adapt to allergens more efficiently.

Misalignments can cause irritation to the nerves traveling between the spinal cord and the brain. When your spine is working correctly, your immune system operates effectively and your ability to withstand stress is improved.

"Chiropractic care helps everyone, including allergy sufferers, by allowing the body to perform at its most optimal level," concludes Dr. Nygaard.
