For many people, as soon as the doctor says "high cholesterol" they immediately log on to their and. But for pregnant women, the rush for drugs isn't as clear cut.
The research is still out as to whether there are any safe cholesterol lowering medications that are approved during pregnancy. That means that if you are pregnant or if you are trying to conceive, you should probably hold off on medications.
So how can you naturally lower your cholesterol?
First, it would probably be a good idea to speak with a dietician or nutritionist about a diet plan. During the next nine months, you'll have the double goal of eating well for fetus as well as eating well to protect your heart.
People with high cholesterol are advised to reduce their intake of fat, but pregnant women need to be careful not to eliminate too much fat, especially the good type of fat (monounsaturated fats), like olive oil and nuts. Your baby's brain needs fat in order to develop, so while you should be careful to eliminate bad fats from your diet, please don't eliminate the good fats!
Weight loss is another issue that puts pregnant women with high cholesterol at a crossroads. Losing weight is a great way to lower cholesterol, but pregnant women are not advised to lose weight, except in some rare cases if you are extremely obese. If you don't fall under that category, your doctor or nutritionist may suggest that you work to gain weight only very slightly.
Otherwise, just know that 9 months of high cholesterol, as long as you're eating well and exercising regularly, is not going to cause significant harm, to you or to your baby. As soon as your baby comes out, you should consider going back on medication.
