When dealing with high cholesterol, you need to seriously watch what you eat. This is especially true for pregnant women. But since so many women may not want to take cholesterol medications during their pregnancy, they need to work extra hard at following a cholesterol diet which is safe for pregnant women.

Here are some tips to keep your cholesterol down during your pregnancy:

1. Eat more fiber, both soluble and insoluble fiber. Here’s yet another reason to fill up on fruits, veggies, and whole grains. Meal ideas: Oatmeal with fresh berries, Broccoli with melted low fat cheese and whole wheat bread crumbs, or Whole wheat pasta topped with veggie stir fry.

2. Eat healthier fats. You need fat to help your baby’s brain and body develop properly, but too much fat can harm your heart and your arteries. Try and strike a balance by eating healthy monounsaturated fats like olive oil and avocadoes.

3. Drink fluids. And not sugary, caffeinated, or bubbly fluids, but water or water flavored with a little bit of 100% natural juice. Make sure to drink a lot of water before and after (mostly after) a workout.

4. Do low-impact cardio aerobics. Try the elliptical, a stationary bike, or a treadmill, or try a low-impact aerobic class. A pre-natal aerobic class would be ideal since you’d be assured that your instructor knows what’s healthy and what’s not for a pregnant body.

5. Quit smoking, don’t drink alcohol, and cut back on caffeine. Second hand smoke can be just as bad as smoking yourself, so try and avoid that as well.
