United States and Europe both have a history of bed and breakfast accommodation dating back to the time of their origin. Since an early time period, travelers were being offered a stay for the night by the locals, as these homestays were considered safe and reliable. Such informal accommodations can still be found in the US and Worldwide. However, the nature of such accommodations has changed to a certain extent.

What does Bed and Breakfast (B&B) offer today?

Earlier, B&B used to be simple homestays with the owners of the house. Today, these may or may not include the occupancy of the owners. Further, the average number of rooms in a bed and breakfast has also increased. Today, a traveler can expect, on an average, small lodging for an overnight accommodation with breakfast. The breakfast expenses are included in the accommodation charges. Most of the B&B offer attached bath and wash basin. There also is a facility to cook one’s own meal.

Various types of B&B:

Antique Style: There are a number of unused old homes that are converted into B&B. They tend to show off the way in which they were built originally. Their architecture, beautiful wood work, spacious brick fireplaces, and other designs of old era are the center of attraction for the guests.

Inns: Unable to find time to manage a bed and breakfast accommodation, most owners decide on hiring professional staff. However, such professionally managed bed and breakfast are categorized as inn or hotel. In comparison to the traditional concept of B&B, inns have more number of rooms for commercial use.

Guest Houses: These form another variation of cheap bed and breakfast accommodation. These offer high service levels, local knowledge and personal touch during the stay. Guest house has a more limited staff presence than a hotel and therefore, it is necessary to make reservations in advance. Various categories of rooms in guest house can be broadly categorized into the following:

* Deluxe: The highest standard of a room in a guest house that comes with elite furniture as well as facilities like Jacuzzi.
* En-Suite: Comes with a private bath room with bedroom.
* Standard: The guest needs to share the bathroom, kitchen and all the other facilities, however, there is a washbasin attached with the bedroom.

Bed & Breakfast Benefits:

* Economy: At the time of the Great Depression, both host and the travelers derived advantage from the concept of bed and breakfast. It provided income to the home owner and inexpensive accommodation to the travelers. Similarly, today also, people find these accommodations to be economically advantageous.
* Convenience: A local atmosphere is comfortable for staying while one travels. It also provides a personal touch to the travel experience of an individual, and if you are taken by your mood, you can even cook a meal for yourself! However, make sure that the B&B has fire resistance, fire escape, and smoke detectors in each guest room for your safety.
