| Bio Diesel Generators - The Greener Option |

Standby diesel generators have for a long time been an essential purchase for companies that would lose operational capabilities should the main power supply fail. Diesel generators have for many years operated using tax free Red Diesel - but in more recent years a greener bio-diesel has been developed. Bio-diesel is the eco-friendly option but unfortunately it does not have a very long shelf life, Red Diesel can remain in a fuel tank for up to 10 years and still operate the standby generator, bio-diesel can only last for up to 6 months. This is a drawback for organisations that want a greener standby generator as the bio-diesel will have to be replaced every 6 months regardless of use - hence bio-diesel generators are better for organisations that wish to have continuous power rather than standby power.
All bio-diesel generators have been manufactured to utilise EU EN14214 bio diesel fuel and it is imperative that this is the only bio-fuel that is used. Bio-diesel is a vegetable derivative hence its shorter shelf life and it is recommended that agitators are also used to reduce the risk of the fuel deteriorating in the fuel tank. A highly qualified, specialist engineer will be required to install a bio-diesel generator.
Bio-diesel generators come in both non-silent and silent models - those bio-generators that are not encased in a soundproofing canopy are extremely noisy and require installation in a basement or specially soundproofed room inside the company building. Silent bio diesel generators can be installed outside the company building in for instance a car park or similar. The fuel tanks are usually installed inside the canopy resulting in an on-board system but there is an option for the non-silent bio diesel generator to have a separate fuel tank. If the bio-diesel generator is not complete within a canopy it is called an open-set generator. Open-set generators are positioned on a skid with the generator, fuel tank and alternator as separate components.
Bio-diesel generators usually generate between 250kVA and 600kVA and to be classed as silent can only emit between 60dbA and 75dbA of sound in 1 metre of open space. The size of the fuel tank can be manufactured to meet a customer's needs but it will be necessary to discuss this during a consultation prior to quotation. The consultation is a crucial part of the process before purchasing a bio-diesel generator - experienced engineers can inform the best power supply solution to purchase, depending on the type of power supply required, for example standby power or continuous power. It is strongly advised that a consultation takes place to ensure the purchase of a generator fit for purpose, remember bio-diesel generators are more suitable for continuous power supplies rather than standby power.
Finally, when deciding on a bio-diesel generator the climate in the area where it is to be installed must be taken into consideration. If the generator is to be installed in the UK all should be fine but for multi-destination companies with global locations seek expert advice from the bio-diesel generator supplier who will suggest the best generators for different or extreme climates.
