| Building a Team: More Than Resume Shopping |

High performance teams aren’t the result of bringing a bunch of individuals together and throwing them a task. They are forged through shared experience, shared vision, and the ability to work past individual learning and developing styles towards an approach that benefits the group. Creating a high performance team takes good leadership, as well as, good management. It takes an understanding of team member’s behavioral strengths and their weaknesses, and using that knowledge to forge interpersonal work relationships that augment the strengths and downplay the weaknesses.
This is not an easy task. Teams need to develop a rapport, and this does not naturally occur in a group. Too often you see teams split off into pairs and never rejoin the group. This is why so many management teams and corporate executives are putting solid resources into developing team building activities and programs for their employees. Cohesive teams execute their activities quicker and more effectively.
Team building activities are generally focused around building trust and discovering how your coworkers learn and execute a task. The activities can be anything from putting a puzzle together to being dropped down in a mountainous terrain and navigating back to the starting point. The whole idea is to get the group out of their safety zone and into a discovery zone. There is a whole industry that supports team building. It exists because companies were able to discover cost benefits to supporting activities of this type. The goal isn’t to get individuals to come to work every day and do what is asked of them, but to create a team that can anticipate what is needed and do it.
