| Can I Host My Website At My Home Computer? |

A web server is a powerful device with a stable operating system. A stable OS for a web server offers inbuilt security features for protection from virus attacks and hacking, GUI-based software for ease of administration, scalability to upgrading of software and third party software for provision of additional security and functionality.
A static IP address is needed so that the location of the hosted websites does not change. Each computer connected with Internet needs a unique number assigned to it for identification purpose, known as the IP address, which is a series of four numbers, each less than 255 and are separated by dots. Domain names are associated with IP addresses and are stored on different computers globally, such that they are then referred to as Domain Name Servers (DNS). Many of us have Internet connections on our home computer from the local ISPs (Internet Service Providers). Each time you connect to the Internet, these ISPs assign your PC with a dynamic IP address, due to which your website does not load unless you change the information on the Nameserver. And this is not possible as every time your computer’s IP address changes. Thus, you need a static IP address to host a website on your computer. You can obtain a static IP address by either upgrading your package or shift to an ISP providing one. A static IP can fetch you an additional 30-50 dollars per month.
Secondly, your web server needs to have a 24x7 stable Internet connection. Obviously, you would not like you website to have frequent downtimes and hence lose on your potential clients.
The need for having server software is equally important; Apache is apparently the most used web server on the Internet worldwide. It is open-source software which can be easily installed on different platforms, such as Linux, UNIX, Windows and Mac. Linux versions mostly come with an Apache server already running.
Plan it such a way that you have your home computer properly configured to protect against accidental misuse and counter any virus attacks or attacks from hackers. The key directories of the OS and other programs need to be protected for smooth functioning of the server.
