Muffins are now being used to check risk for diabetes and its warning signs. Several tests have been designed including lab tests to check blood sugar, but there are many cases of undetected diabetes that exhibit warning labels in signs. Real Food Test Preferred Over Sugary Solution
The glucose tolerance test usually consists of a sugary solution taken in by people after an overnight fast wherein the doctors monitor reaction of the body and blood glucose levels. The present study follows a new concept. It consists of lab tests monitoring blood sugar levels after people have consumed real food containing sugar.
Researchers from the Albert Einstein College of medicine in New York found women were very reluctant to try out the oral glucose tolerance test using syrup. An alternative in the form of muffins actually resembled a pleasant experience of eating delicious food usually part of breakfast. Muffin Test Prove Cheap Alternative but Standardization Difficult
Findings from the study indicated glucose tolerance in women could be easily diagnosed in a much cheaper manner using muffins than a standard sugary liquid drink. A total of 73 women had to undergo the “muffin test” after an overnight fast. Each volunteer aged between 40 to 50 years was given one muffin from a local bakery from among corn, blueberry, and chocolate chip flavored muffins. After a period of two hours, blood glucose levels were measured to analyze if the body reacted differently to muffins instead of sugary syrup. A group of 12 women had to undergo the standard port oral glucose tolerance test.
Results from the “muffin test” returned positive in eight cases out of the 73 women tested. Two cases in the 12-person group showed early signs of diabetes. What was more interesting was the fact that over 50% cases detected with the muffin test would have not been noticed with the standard test. In the case of the 12 group test, the standard test indicated just one case with early signs of diabetes.

The standard test has been able to detect positive cases of diabetes, while the “muffin test” is able to identify cases more prone to getting diabetes in the future.
