Vitamin D is vital for good health, and its deficiency is known to cause medical conditions such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Several observational studies have been conducted in the past on the effects of vitamin D. Canadian pharmacies went through a new study indicating enhanced vitamin D supplements have been found to be effective in the treatment of asthma. Patients suffering from asthma usually buy Singulair to find relief from symptoms, and historical data now proves vitamin D may help in the control of asthma by blocking inflammation-causing proteins in the lungs. It also helps in producing the protein interleukin-10 known to have anti-inflammatory properties.

Deficiency of Vitamin D Increases Risk of Asthma

A review published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology went through information on vitamin D and its relation to asthma. Researchers found deficiency was directly connected to inadequate functioning of the lungs, increased airway reactivity, and inadequate control of asthma. Factors resulting in producing less vitamins in the body included African American origin, obesity, and westernized or urban style of living.

Vitamin D is generated in a body by exposure to sunlight, which is why it is known as the sunshine vitamin. Results accumulated through the study are indicative of whether a person gets sufficient sunlight based on geographical location. For example, researchers believe an individual may have sufficient quantity of vitamin D in the summer but not in the winter. It can also be derived from food sources including eggs, dairy products, and fish. Supplements containing vitamin D are also helpful. Canadian pharmacies advise people to have the right diet containing substantial quantity of vitamin D to avoid problems during flu season.

Earlier Study Indicates Vitamin D Fends Off Flu

An earlier study conducted on Japanese schoolchildren indicated vitamin D supplements are capable of preventing seasonal flu in addition to the already established fact that it could prevent osteoporosis. People were three times less likely to get asthma or develop flu.

The Jikei University School of Medicine based in Tokyo tested vitamin D3 supplements on two groups of 167 children each aged between 6 to 15 years. Children on supplements were given 1,200 international units of the vitamin every day. The comparison group was put on inactive placebo during peak season of flu and cold. Since vitamin D3 is more easily absorbed into the body, results of the study were quite effective.

A total of 31 out of 167 children on placebo developed influenza A in comparison to 18 out of 167 on vitamin D supplements. In other words, children on vitamin D were 58% less likely to develop viral infection. Children historically affected by asthma were less likely to get asthma attacks. Just two children in the vitamin D group were found to have asthma attacks from the period December 2008 till March 2009.

Long-term trials are necessary to actually record effects of vitamin D supplements on people suffering from asthma. Circumstantial evidence is insufficient to determine whether lack of vitamin D is all that leads to asthma. Canadian pharmacies are convinced definitive studies are needed to find out how vitamin D interventions are likely to create the necessary positive effect in the long term.
