People eat all too often for their bellies and not enough for their hearts. Our hearts need nourishment too, and when you neglect your heart's needs…well…you know that can't be good. People who overeat (and on the wrong foods) or who undereat end up causing irreversible damage to their hearts, that often ends with heart attack or stroke.
But these fates can be prevented, and it doesn't even need to be too difficult. Just adopt these heart healthy tips and you'll find your heart pumping better, for longer!
1. Choose healthy fats. In general you'll want to significantly reduce your fat intake, and whatever fats you DO keep in your diet (because you can't live without them entirely!) should be healthy fats, also known as monounsaturated fats, and include foods like canola oil, nut butters, and avocados. Make sure you stay away from trans-fats.
2. Eat low fat proteins. Animal proteins that are high in fat can raise LDL cholesterol and cause damage to your heart. You'll want to stick with lean proteins like poultry, fish, egg whites, and dairy products to get the protein you need, without the fat. Fish is a great option since it contains a great supply of omega-3 fatty acids, a healthy fat that great for lowering triglycerides. Vegetable proteins like beans and tofu are also great low fat options.
3. Eat more fruits and vegetables. This is another golden rule for heart health. The vitamins and minerals contained in fruits and vegetables, plus the dietary fiber, plus the fact that they're low in calories and cholesterol free make them a perfect food for people who heart or cholesterol problems. Snack on fruit whenever you want. There's no reason to limit your intake here.
4. Consider medication. Cholesterol lowering medication can reduce LDL while reducing your risk for heart disease. You can safely at an at an affordable price…and it could save your life!
