| Hard Drive Recovery After Repairing, Upgrading or Reinstalling Windows XP |

You might lose all of your valuable data, which is stored in All Users folder and settings and default program template that are stored in Default User folder after reinstalling, upgrading or repairing Microsoft Windows XP. You might be missing all documents, music files, pictures that are stored in Shared Documents folder, Startup group items and Start menu shortcuts. This issue could take place after you carry out any of the below actions on your computer, which has MS Windows XP installed by the computer manufacturer (also called OEM or Original Equipment Manufacturer):
You reinstall Microsoft Windows XP on same folder by selecting Upgrade (Recommended) after running Winnt32.exe, or though Install Windows XP link on “Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP” screen, which appears when Windows XP CD. It is also called in-place upgrade.
You repair MS Windows XP by booting your system from XP installation CD and pressing Enter key to set up XP and then press R key to repair selected installation.
You upgrade Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Professional.
Root of the problem
This issue takes place if Undo_guimode.txt file is there in your Windows\System32 folder on Windows hard drive when you carry out any of above actions on your system that has Microsoft Windows XP pre-installed. Such situations cause data loss and need hard drive data recovery to retrieve lost data.
Solution
In order to prevent this problem from occurring, you need to perform any of the following operations before you proceed for repair, upgrade or reinstallation:
Install latest service pack of Microsoft Windows XP.
If you're prompted by the Setup to update setup files, click Yes, download the updated Setup files (Recommended), click Next button. The option is not available when you repair Windows XP by booting your system from XP boot CD and pressing Enter key to set up.
Manually remove Undo_guimode.txt file from Windows\System32 folder prior to perform any of the above actions.
