| Publish Your Book Yourself! |

Perhaps you are one of those people who like to write and feel some of your writing is good and even publishable. But when they presented it to a publishing firm, it was flatly rejected, perhaps more than once. It’s easy to get discouraged and wonder if it’s worth the trouble. On the other hand such writers feel their piece could benefit others and shouldn’t be buried in a drawer somewhere.
If you identify with this, consider self-publishing your work. Here are some reasons to consider this investment. First, perhaps the publishers are looking for subjects you find offensive. You want to be more conservative than what is selling today. Perhaps too your writing ability is improving but you don’t want to wait until you are really good to get it in print.
Working with a self-publishing firm means you cover some or all of the cost of printing your work. Many variations of this are available. Typically, the writer simply contracts to buy a given number of books. The writer will then market them himself in hopes of recouping the cost and making a profit. Some better companies will work with the writer to improve it and help market the final product.
The relationship between the publishing company and the author varies. Some agree to foot some of the cost in exchange for some of the profit. Others require the cost to be paid by the author who then gets all the profit. Be careful that you are working with a reputable firm. Scams are everywhere, firms whose promises are bigger than their product. For example, do they demand that you pay in advance? If they do, you are in danger of ending up with less money and no publication.
One advantage of self-publishing is to avoid the editor’s scalpel. Also, you can still spread your message with a minimum of cost. Third, you must believe in what you wrote and do the best you can in order to invest several hundred dollars in the writing. Fourth, self-publishing markets the work and may bring it to the eyes of a larger publisher.
Some disadvantages of self-publishing are also worth considering. First, though you have no editor to change your content, you also may not have someone to help you improve it. Often the work of an editor improves the writing.
. Second, publishers provide major exposure for your work. Unless you know a lot of people, you may have difficulty even getting your investment back. Third, self-publishing is more money out of your own pocket. The thought is every before you: perhaps no one wants to publish it because it just isn’t any good.
If you only need a few copies, you might consider this. First, print out a formatted copy of your work just as you want it to appear. Programs like Clickbook all you to collate it in a variety of sizes and with front and back correctly figured. Hire a local printing firm to print as many copies as you want.
Then take the copies to a hand bookbinder to make into hardbacks. This way, it will last for generations to come. If you need an expert, consider Tightly Bound Books where you'll receive "Book binding repair with personal care." |
