The native capacity of Sony AIT1 SDX1-25C tape is “25GB” which has been enhanced to “35GB” in the Sony AIT-1 SDX1-35C tape. Features of MIC (Memory in Cassette) in the Sony AIT1 media also have been improved that includes the support for multi-point load & multi-partitioning. This up-gradation enables its users to benefit from the higher capacity tape media and it protects their investment as well. All the AIT1 tape drives, that have enhanced firmware can write as well as read both the 35GB and 25GB AIT-1 tape cartridges. The AIT-2 tape drives have the ability to read & write 50GB, 35GB and 25GB tape media.
Advanced intelligent tape cartridge has the innovative and unique feature of “MIC” that speeds the process of file searching and media load. With the new enhanced MIC, the sequential searching of the entire data tape is eliminated as the applications are allowed to directly move to their desired location on the AIT tape media. So this results in fast searching of files on the tape. Enhanced MIC provides the capability of multi-point load that enables the consumers to eject or insert the AIT tape cartridge at current partition. In this way, the need of rewinding the tape to the beginning (after each use) is eliminated.
So as the subsequent AIT tapes mount, the tape media loads at the partition that was last used. This cuts the total data access time. These enhanced characteristic of AIT tape format are ideal for digital-image management applications, data collection and environments of video server. AIT1 35GB tape drive provides significant advantages of performance and price for the mid-range data storage. AIT-1 tape technology provides its consumers increased scalability & flexibility by the employment of both the 35GB and 25GB AIT media.
Sony is dedicated to rapidly enhance the performance and recording capability of AIT tape technology. Product line of advanced intelligent tape maintains the superior qualities of performance, reliability and stability in the compact form factor (3.5 inch). Mean-time between failure and average head life included in these specifications are 250,000 hours & 50,000 hours respectively.
Sony SDX1-35C AIT1 tape is completely backward compatible (read & write) with the AIT-1 25GB SDX1-25C tape media. Sony lengthened the tape media of first generation AIT to 230 meters from its previous released media of 170 meters. There was no compromise in the reliability, data integrity and performance of the Sony (35GB) AIT-1 tape. The new Sony AIT tape cartridge with extended length offers the same outstanding, exceptional durability & reliability that was provided by its prior version.
Other tape technologies require periodic cleaning of the tape cartridge, but it not necessary in the AIT format because the AME (Advanced Metal Evaporated) technique is utilized to keep the tape reel clean from contaminants. AME technique coats the AIT tape reel with DLC (diamond like carbon). DLC coating helps in extending the life of tape head that provides the customers more recording capacity and outstanding performance.
