What is your business idea?
Whether you know just what you want to do, or have some ideas that you have to sort out, this is the first question to ask yourself. You need to know just what kind of business you want to start. Your business should come from something that you are passionate about and are interested in. It also helps to know a lot about the topic.
Who is your market?
You need a target market before beginning a business venture. This is the group of people that will make up the majority of your customer base. When deciding on a business venture you should consider the needs of your area, or a niche that is missing in the business world. It's smart to back up your ideas about your target market with some facts. Do your research. Talk to possible customers, community leaders or the online community (for an internet business) to see if there is a desire for the kind of company you are thinking of starting.
Don't Get Too Stuck to an Idea
While you may be able to picture your new business in your head, down to the very last detail, you don’t want to get too focused on that perfect picture. There are plenty of things that can change the final business you open from the one you are envisioning right now. Therefore, you need to be prepared to be flexible and make modifications as needed.
Create a Business Plan
One of the most important things any business can have is a business plan. This is essentially the nuts and bolts of your business on paper. A business plan should include:
Goals of the business
How the business will reach those goals
Who is involved in reaching these goals?
What type of financing will be needed to reach those goals?
How that financing will be used
Not only will this plan be useful to you as you sort out the workings of your new business, but it will also be very useful when you decide to try and seek the funding for your company, as banks will see this as a sign of knowing what you want and how you plan to get it.
