Have a renewed awareness in the ocean biome with these ocean facts. Find out how our understanding of the sea life contributes to appreciation, and also conservation initiatives dedicated to it.

The animals that inhabit the ocean biome are so unique that occasionally researchers come across completely new creatures each year. The marine biome is home to diverse types of fish, sea mammals, crustaceans, and sometimes birds. Fish and other ocean animals have for ages been consumed by men. On the other hand, the earth’s population has grown and because of this, demand has also ballooned. Overfishing, in all its different, unsustainable forms, has lowered the fish population in the oceans of the planet.

It is necessary for man to be aware of the marine biome for the generations to come as this is the earth’s heritage. It is also the population’s main source of food. Hence, here are some ocean facts to boost knowledge and involvement in the protection of this distinctive habitat.

1. There are five major oceans on the planet. These are the Pacific, Atlantic, Arctic, Southern, and Indian Ocean.

2. The largest of these is the Pacific Ocean that has a total area of 155.557 million sq . kilometers. Among the most important ocean facts for the Pacific is its name. Pacific signifies “of calm nature” but the name is the actual opposite of its nature, as severe tropical storms are often produced here.

3. The coast that surround this great body of water are sprinkled with volcanoes and fault lines. That’s why frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions take place in nations where the Pacific Ring of Fire passes, like Japan, Chile, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Furthermore, the islands of Hawaii were produced from the volcanic activity in the Pacific Ocean.

4. The Pacific Ocean is filled with extremes. The world’s biggest creature, the blue whale, can be found here. Plankton, among the tiniest microorganisms in the planet, is also found in the waters of the Pacific.

5. This body of water sustains a diversity of animals, like wrasses, hagfish, sea turtles, and whale sharks. You can find also sea mammals, like whales, dolphins, and dugongs. Oceanic birds are also abundant in the coasts of this ocean such as herons, gulls, albatrosses, and puffins.

6. Tons of waste materials like oil and plastic are dumped into the seashore each year, killing millions of fish, ocean mammals, and other animals. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a mass of floating waste in the heart of the ocean, is said to be approximately the size of the state of Texas.

7. Billions of people rely on the ocean for food. Developed nations around the world consume more seafood and other sea products, than those residing in developing countries. If left unrestrained, over consumption and unsustainable fishing procedures could lead to decline in fish population, as well as extinction for some species.

It is important to know these ocean facts to obtain a renewed understanding of the marine biome. Like everything else in the world, nothing is permanent and our every act has a ripple effect on the environment. So, it is in our best interest that we take good care of the ocean biome for the current and the upcoming generation.
