Theatre sets are incredibly varied and designers seem to delight in dreaming up more and more unusual concepts, often incorporating the latest technology, to delight and sometimes baffle audiences. Having a convincing theatre set will really bring the audience into the production and convince them that they"re part of the production.

Theatre sets were traditionally made of flats. These flats formed the three sided box, open to the audience which was the traditional set of proscenium arch theatres such as those in the West End. In fact, the theatrical expression are breaking the fourth wall comes from this. When an actor breaks the invisible fourth wall, they are engaging directly with the audience. The idea is that the set is made of four walls but the front one is invisible (so that the audience can see what's happening inside the box.) The breaking of the fourth wall is constant in some types of show such as pantomimes.

The box set made of flats is still used most of the time but it has been enhanced by the use of video technology. For example, a recent touring production of "The Pillowman" by Martin McDonagh was constructed of clear walls. This enabled the projection of suitably disturbing images which were a reflection of the dystopian society in which the play was set.

Some theatre sets dispense with the idea of the box set completely and productions can be staged in the round. This is where the audience surrounds the action on stage. In traverse is where the audience are seated either side of the playing area.

The complexity of theatre sets and the prohibitive expense of storing them have accelerated the growth of specialist set hire companies like Keeley Hire. If you're looking for props to help enamour the spirit of your production, were sure to have what you're looking for at Keeley Hire.
