If you want original looking custom postcards, you will want that “originality’ to exist in many aspects of its layout. Let me list down for you all the different areas in your postcards where you will want that original thinking to take place.
Once you already make these aspects look and feel more original, your overall postcard look should show that unique look as well, hopefully impressing your readers enough to make it more memorable. So let us start with one of the most important aspects of a color postcard where you will want pure originality to bloom, the main cover picture.
1. In the pictures (of course!).
Yes of course, if you want original looking postcards, your first stop at real customization and innovation is in the cover picture. This means that you will have to compose/create not only a beautiful type image, but you must also actually have something fresh and new to show people. Do not “just” copy the styles of most commercial postcards out there.
Turn things on their heads and make people look at those common picture objects in different angles. Use alternative models, or digitally create some new type compositions of your own. As long as you do not go for the typical pretty picture portrait type images for your postcards, you should already achieve a significantly original look with your postcard prints.
2. In the layout/cropping.
You can also add that subtle original look by being more creative and innovative with the layout of your postcards. Instead of just a picture portrait type layout with the main image, you will want to do things a bit more different.
Take the main object off-center for example and then add in the title balancing it out on the other end. Or maybe you can move things around, change the orientation or even the spacing or cropping. This alone should take away from the typical postcard look, giving it a more original feel.
3. In the text.
When it comes specifically to the text, you can make things more original looking by simply using a different font style. More specifically, you should use a font style that is not typically in use for postcards. If people have not seen that font style too much, they will get a more original sense of the postcards, not identifying it as like the other types of commercial postcards they see. So try as much as possible to get some new fonts out to make your postcards look original.
4. In the template.
You can also add that original sense in your postcards by adopting a slightly more different template. Instead of the standard postcard template that you use for most commercial postcards, you might want to try out slightly larger or slightly smaller postcards. That change in size can be subtle but noticeable enough for people to take note of. Along with other changes, this should contribute immensely to that original look and feel.
5. In the materials.
Lastly, you can project that original sense with your postcards by adjusting the materials used in your printing process. Using glossy or metallic inks for example for your text elements can already help your postcards gain that extra elegance and impressive power to look totally original.
Use even more exotic materials like glitters and ribbons if needed, and surely people will notice how unique your postcards are. Just make sure you use the right materials that supplement your designs and that original and effective look should work quite well.
Now you can identify exactly where you will need to focus your attentions with your postcards to make sure that the key aspects are customized to achieve that original look. Make sure you just review the items above so that you do not miss anything in the process.
